Packers Invite Vince Young to Spark Interest in Team

0

De Pere, WI: Tired of being left out of off-season, pre-season, and seasonal NFL drama, the Green Bay Packers have invited Vince Young, the poster man-child for football drama, to try out for the quarterback position. Well, the backup quarterback position, barring any issues with Aaron Rodgers.

For months, the Packers have silently gone through their football routine in the hopes of bringing yet another Vince Lombardi trophy to Green Bay. It is the simple thinking and planning of “let’s bring that trophy named after our old coach back home” that has fueled the Packers to win 4 of them.

Unfortunately, this sort of routine doesn’t make headlines. “Packers Prepare According to Plan”, “Packers Pack Out Training Camp”, and “All Quiet On the Northern Front” are headlines that just don’t have that media pizazz. The New England Patriots lost all of their wide receivers, but gained a murder headline with Aaron Hernandez and salvation with Tim Tebow. The Kansas City Chiefs went out and got a reference to Joe Montana in the media by getting another quarterback from San Francisco, Alex Smith. The New York Jets still have Mark Sanchez’ Butt-Fumble to keep them in the public eye for as long as Sanchez stays with the Jets. How can the Packers truly compete.

vince_youngThe answer comes in two words: Vince Young.

This journeyman quarterback has more drama surrounding him than a week-long marathon of The Real Housewives of Everywhere. After winning a BCS Championship, being crowned the Rose Bowl MVP twice, and being so awesome that the University of Texas retired his number, Vince Young was drafted 3rd overall in the 2006 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans.

Then the drama came. Young took a walk to clear his head in 2008, and the media swarmed, thinking the quarterback was suicidal after being booed by fans. After 4 years with the Titans, Young bounced from the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011 to the training camp of the Buffalo Bills in 2012. Money problems also became an issue in 2012, with Young defaulting on loans after spending all of the $34 million salary he had accumulated. The Madden Curse seemed to be in full swing.

Now, the Green Bay Packers can be a part of this circus with Young at camp, even if just for a short while.

“The last time the Packers were even remotely interesting was when Aaron Rodgers was photobombing his own teammates, and that got old in about 4 days,” stated beat writer Paul Emmerlan. “With Vince Young, the speculation headlines will probably be as good as the real headlines. Only time will tell.”

Aaron Rodgers will be relieved to have Young. His last media splash barely registered, when he defended defending Biogenesis suspect Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers.
